We all know that head-on collisions occur sometimes, but no one probably expects to hear about a head-on collision occurring on an interstate highway. But, according to a recent report, that is exactly what happened in Pennsylvania on July 29 and the results were deadly.
The reports indicate that a vehicle was being driven the wrong way by a man from Philadelphia in the northbound lanes of I-95 on the morning of July 29. Another vehicle approached heading the correct direction - northbound - as the Philadelphia man's vehicle proceeded southbound. The two vehicles collided head-on.
The Philadelphia man was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. The reports indicate that there were three people in the other vehicle. All three were transported for medical treatment in the immediate aftermath of the collision. One of the passengers died at the hospital. There was no indication as to the extent of the injuries suffered by the other passenger and the driver of that vehicle.
A head-on collision of this nature is rare, but, as this recent report makes clear, not impossible. An investigation into the accident is ongoing, and there must be some hope that the investigators can determine why the Philadelphia man was driving the wrong way on an interstate. It appears to have been an early morning crash, so alcohol or drugs may have played a role, but that is pure speculation at this point. However, in a head-on collision, when one driver is obviously driving in the wrong direction, fault can be fairly clearly determined.
